Importance of Mom Groups

When I first moved to (*insert small town here*) I was newly married with a 2-year-old and a baby on the way. I had just moved from a very large city and aside from my husband I knew absolutely no one in this little town. Additionally, I was in the beginning of making the transition from working mom to stay at home mom.  Boy, was I unprepared for how difficult, isolating and frustrating being a stay at home mom could be.

I endured a very lonely 8 months trying to establish my new identity as a wife and stay at home mother. Now don’t confuse lonely for unhappy. Of course, I was happy! I love my husband and I love my kids. I mean lonely in the context of trying to find myself in these new roles. Having a newborn is difficult enough for anyone, but throw in a bunch of life changes and it can become VERY VERY difficult. After scouring the internet for any sort of play groups or opportunities for mom interaction I stumbled on the local Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) group. I was hesitant at first but decided to give it a shot. I am sooooo glad I did. I have met the most amazing women in this group. The group also opened new doors for me and new opportunities to get together with other stay at home moms. Because of this amazing group of ladies, I have made lots of great friends to experience life with.

I encourage every stay at home mom out there to look for these groups! As moms, we need friends; and I mean we REALLY need friends. Whether it be a MOPS group, library story time, or a music class; put yourself out there! Motherhood is hard work and we weren’t made to do it alone.
